The successful candidate will serve on the Policy, Architecture, and Knowledge Transfer team and manage systems engineering, radio frequency spectrum, certification, cybersecurity, and deployment technical assistance projects that are consistent with the ITS Strategic Plan 2015 to 2019 portfolio. The General Engineer will also serve as a technical expert on ITS ranging from the development of connected vehicle core system architectures, application of wireless communication to safety and mobility enhancing systems, certification processes, smart city interoperability, vehicle and infrastructure cybersecurity, and connected vehicle testbed operations and deployment support.

THE SIX MINUTE PITCH 2017 – TRB’s Official Transportation Industry Startup Competition: Applications Period is Open

The Six Minute Pitch: A Transportation Startup Challenge is a special Young Member Council (YMC) session at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2017 Annual Meeting during which selected presenters pitch their cutting-edge, research-based concept for a transportation product- or service-based business to a panel of distinguished transportation industry investors and entrepreneurs in just six minutes. It’s basically the transportation industry’s national version of Shark Tank, Startup Battlefield, or Dragons’ Den!

Applications for the 2017 Six Minute Pitch are due October 19th by midnight eastern standard time. Four teams will be selected to present their six minute pitch during TRB’s 2017 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in January.  Applications and attendance for the Six Minute Pitch have grown every year since it started in 2013 – and this year is expected to be no exception. Any professional or entrepreneur with a transportation-related business idea or active startup is encouraged to apply.  Preference for selection to participate will be given to young professionals (TRB defines ‘young’ as professionals 35 or younger).  A preference also will be given to individuals who intend to register for the TRB Annual Meeting (see for details).

New this year, winners will receive a prize valued at approximately $1,200: a one-year membership to the 1776 Union (, a global platform enabling the next billion entrepreneurs to succeed by breaking down barriers & empowering startups to access the resources they need, regardless of location. All participants in the Six Minute Pitch receive valuable exposure and feedback for their ideas, and the winning submission is also typically covered in diverse media outlets.

The Planning Division of the City of Gaithersburg Department of Planning & Code Administration is seeking an experienced professional for the full-time position of Transportation Planner (Planner II).  The primary responsibility of the position will be coordinating all transportation planning activities and serving as liaison to the Transportation Advisory Committee with additional roles in traditional planning and zoning activities.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to review site development applications and have thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation, urban design, architecture, and zoning.  Additional responsibilities may include coordination with outside governmental agencies; processing zoning text amendments, abandonment applications, and annexation cases; and the use of GIS for the creation of maps.

This is a full-time salaried “exempt” position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week (not eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the City’s personnel regulations).  A core work schedule based on operational needs will be determined.

Starting salary is negotiable within the salary range depending on knowledge, qualifications, training, certifications, and experience.  Includes a generous benefits package.

Job Functions

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates Transportation planning activities; serves as liaison to the Transportation Advisory Committee.
  • Develops, prepares,  and  updates  short-  and  long-range  neighborhood  Transportation, revitalization, and improvement plans.
  • Conducts extensive research and prepares studies on Transportation and other areas of comprehensive planning activities.
  • Interprets ordinance and code provisions for architects, engineers, developers, and the public.
  • Gathers, assimilates, interprets, and analyzes a variety of data and information pertaining to Transportation.
  • Assists  with  development,  update,  and  maintenance  of  the  Master  Plan  and  land development regulations.
  • Conducts review  of  various  development  applications  including  site  plans,  permits, rezoning, variance requests, etc.
  • Writes and presents formal and technical reports, correspondence, and other planning materials; assists in preparation of policy papers and reports for commissions, boards, committees, and elected officials.
  • Responds to public inquiries pertaining to Transportation and other planning policies. Makes oral presentations on Transportation and other planning matters and projects at public meetings.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Any combination of education, training, and/or experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Requires a Master’s Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering, Architecture, or closely related field, and at least two years of progressive professional planning experience at the regional or local government level.  (Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree supplemented by at least four years of progressive professional planning experience may substitute for a Master’s Degree.)

Specific experience and/or training in the principles adn practices of Transportation Planning is required.  Must have the ability to read and interpret Master Plans, Zoning Ordinances, construction drawings, site plans, and architectural drawings.  Must have excellent presentation, organization, and writing skills and have a work style that supports teamwork, collaboration, and positive relationships that will complement the Department’s work environment and customer service goals.

Must possess certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners or be able to obtain certification within one year of hire. Must have a valid Maryland driver’s license or be able to obtain by hire date.

TRB 2017: Interactive Workshop – Analyze This! What YOU want to know – Unsolved Mysteries: Have a hard-to-solve problem that needs to be solved?

Unsolved Mysteries: Have a hard-to-solve problem that needs to be solved?

We all are faced with difficult, hard-to-solve problems – so we have created an interactive workshop at the 2017 TRB Annual Meeting we hope will address the unsolved mysteries that vex transportation professionals at all levels of the organizations – from planners to modelers to analysts.  This workshop will present three intriguing, real-world problems selected from a pool of submissions before the workshop.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!   We are looking for real-world transportation problems that can be summarized in a case study from the perspective of an individual or project team.   The case studies should contain pertinent information on the type of problem presented, geographic context, who was impacted and the impact of not reaching a resolution.

The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2016 and submissions can be made using this on-line form at:   Those who submit ideas that are selected will be provided the opportunity to present their problem at the TRB Annual Meeting.

Last year, workshop attendees had an opportunity to solve one of three mysteries. Coca Cola was seeking corporate strategies to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips. The City of Boulder asked the group to explore repurposing travel lanes for multimodal projects. Lastly, the City of Edmonton had question about how to incorporate connected and autonomous vehicle technologies into the regional travel demand model.

The Transportation Planner Series, Planning Division, includes three levels of professional Transportation Planners who manage planning and corridor studies and other planning projects, facilitate community outreach efforts, and represent the Transportation Authority on technical and policy advisory groups.

The Senior Transportation Planner is the intermediate level of the Transportation Planner Series, Planning Division. The Senior Transportation Planner is responsible for assignments that are highly complex and sensitive in nature, where substantial judgment and initiative are essential in making recommendations and resolving problems. The duties specified below are characteristic of the range of duties and responsibilities assigned to this position, and not intended to be a comprehensive listing.


Completion of a graduate degree in an appropriate discipline such as transportation planning or civil engineering; and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation. Basic research methods and database management techniques; proficiency with standard computer spreadsheet, word processing, presentation and internet software; and statistical and computational analysis principles and methods; and advanced knowledge of transportation planning principles, techniques and methods; transportation funding and finance; and capital project development phases. Knowledge in planning and developing freeway managed lanes concepts and vehicle pricing strategies desired.
