This person will report directly to the Policy Director and work closely with Transportation for America Consulting — a mission based consulting service — as well as with our members and stakeholders to help achieve progress on our priorities at all levels of government.

Transportation for America is an alliance of elected, business and civic leaders from communities across the country who are united to ensure that states and the federal government step up to invest in smart, homegrown, locally-driven transportation solutions. We advocate for transportation reforms including increased local control of transportation planning and increased investments in infrastructure that boost long-term regional prosperity, and policies that improve the performance of the transportation system. This includes collaboration and support for local elected officials, chambers of commerce, businesses, and regional leaders in providing the tools and resources to allow them to complete their transportation priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Present and discuss transportation policies and local implications with stakeholders including mayors, state representatives, state DOTs, regional chambers of commerce, transportation planners, businesses and equity advocates.
  • Represent Transportation for America and our key transportation policies before local councils, state legislatures, and on Capitol Hill.
  • Prepare legislative and policy documents related to local, state and federal transportation decisions.
  • Manage transportation policy programs to deliver resources and tools to elected officials and transportation practitioners throughout the country.

Qualifications:

  • Proactive, team-player
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least two years of experience in legislative advocacy
  • Experience with state and/or local transportation policy
  • Experience with federal regulations and Congress is a plus, but not required.

Position Description
The Alliance for Biking & Walking seeks a talented Communications Manager responsible for raising the profile of the grassroots state and local biking and walking advocacy movement. The Communications Manager will help to meet the organization’s overall mission-driven direction with regards to messaging and communications strategy. The selected candidate will manage and implement the Alliance’s organizational communications, including website, email, print, social media, and press relations work. This person will be a storyteller for the active transportation movement, for our member organizations, and for people who walk and bike in North America. The Communications Manager will also oversee the Benchmarking Project, a biennial data collection project and report that the Alliance undertakes in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Duties and Responsibilities
Communications and Design:

  • Set and manage the organization’s overall media, digital, press, and branding approaches.
  • Write, edit, design, and manage print materials, including an annual report, brochures, sponsorship guides, and other materials.
  • Direct and implement email communications, including a monthly newsletter and non-newsletter mass emails.
  • Oversee the organization’s website, blog, and digital presence.
  • Promote the Alliance’s work and the work of our member organizations through traditional media, social media, mass email, and organizational partnerships.
  • Serve as the organization’s representative in the media; shape the organization’s media strategy and conduct proactive press outreach when appropriate.
  • Help write and edit fundraising materials, including grant proposals and appeal letters.
  • Oversee and add to the Alliance for Biking & Walking photo library; organize occasional photo contests to make more photos of walking and bicycling available for advocates.
  • Conduct trainings, facilitate group calls, share resources, and give advice for state and local biking and walking advocacy organizations members on media relations, communications strategy, and digital strategy.
  • Supervise interns and independent contractors as needed.

Benchmarking Project:

  • Supervise the Benchmarking Project Manager, who oversees project planning, vision, research, writing, and data collection for the Benchmarking Report, the Alliance’s biennial report on biking and walking data in the United States.
  • Design and implement release strategy, marketing, distribution, and presentations.
  • Assist with fundraising for an online version of the 2016 Benchmarking Report. If funding is secured, select vendors and manage process for building digital components of the Benchmarking Report.

Qualifications
Essential:

  • A strong commitment to the mission of the Alliance for Biking & Walking.
  • Two or more years’ experience in communications, digital strategy, or a related field.
  • One or more years’ experience in project and staff management.
  • Experience managing an organization’s brand and social media for a brand.
  • Experience with media relations; comfortable speaking on the record.
  • Strong editorial, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proven success with managing and operating CMS and CRM software.
  • Working knowledge of HTML; some knowledge of CSS preferred.

About the role

The newly-created post of Research Officer, based full-time at the Foundation’s secretariat in central London, will deal with all research questions and projects in support of the Director of Environment and Research (See full description below)

In this you will provide seamless service both internally to colleagues and externally to the Foundation’s various statutory bodies, members and partners.

You will assist the Director of Environment and Research, as part of an integrated policy, programmes and communications team, on all aspects of the Foundation’s road safety, environmental and sustainable mobility research policies and activities, such as:

  • conducting research projects (including economic analysis) and producing research outputs;
  • supporting the Foundation’s Seminar programme;
  • maintenance of databases and co-ordination of mailings to Foundation partners and members;
  • preparation of briefings, advocacy and communications materials;

About you

A confident self-starter and ideally equipped with a postgraduate qualification or equivalent, you should have work experience in a research role, ideally in a busy research/campaigns or advocacy environment.  Strong analytical, evaluation and writing skills demonstrating close attention to detail are a must as are excellent social skills, diplomacy and personal presentation.  You should have a solid knowledge of all common IT packages, such as Excel, SPSS, Word and Powerpoint.  Foreign languages would be an asset. Experience of issues around public health/injury research, sustainable mobility and/or international development would also be desirable, but not essential.

The federal policy manager plays a critical role in representing the Safe Routes to School National Partnership on Capitol Hill and with federal agencies. The federal policy manager will regularly meet with Congressional offices and key federal agencies to convey the needs and importance of having Safe Routes to School and to advocate for policies and funding levels that are supportive of Safe Routes to School, active transportation and multi-modal transportation options. This position is also responsible for tracking the implementation of the recent MAP-21 transportation bill, researching and writing policy reports and papers on Safe Routes to School and related topics and producing blog posts and web content. The federal policy manager will collaborate closely with national and state coalition partners to advance active transportation policy and funding. The federal policy manager reports to the deputy director.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four to five years’ proven experience in legislative or government affairs, with a strong preference for experience with federal transportation policy.
  • Track record of analyzing and developing federal legislation and legislative campaigns.
  • Experience in building coalitions and working with allied organizations to achieve policy change goals.
  • Knowledge of Safe Routes to School programs or active transportation a plus.
  • Effective public speaker comfortable presenting in front of large groups or one-on-one.
  • Strong writing skills, including writing for legislative and non-legislative grassroots audiences.
  • Ability to travel to group meetings and conferences as required. Anticipated travel to be approximately two to four out of state trips a year and regular travel (without overnight stays) in the DC region. Occasional work in the evenings or weekends to attend receptions or events.

  • Self-motivated, organized, strong attention to detail, creative and energetic.

The Advocacy Advance Outreach Coordinator will work directly with advocacy organizations and agency staff to increase the awareness of funding programs for walking and biking projects and programs and share best practices in securing and utilizing this funding at the state and local level nationwide. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (National Partnership) is seeking a professional and detail-oriented candidate with experience in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy to join the National Partnership as the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Fellow. This is a temporary, contract position.

The Active Transportation Fellow will work with the Regional Network Manager and Greater Washington DC Regional Policy Manager to advocate for improved transportation funding allocations and policies for Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets and walking and bicycling. Please review the scope of work for the position for detailed information and application instructions.

Required qualifications for the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Policy Fellow include: demonstrated experience in social media; student work or personal work in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy; knowledge of Safe Routes to School and/or Complete Streets; ability to write case studies, participate in work groups and present to a variety of audiences; self-starter; detail-oriented; proficient with social media such as Twitter, Facebook and WordPress, PCs and with MS Office software. The successful candidate will work from their home office with their own personal computer, internet access and telephone. Candidate must be able to attend meetings throughout the region, some of which are not Metro accessible.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is looking for a dedicated, self-motivated lover of bicycling to assist in planning and executing major components of our East of the River 2013 Bicycle Outreach Initiative. This is an expansion of our successful 2012 program and includes distribution of community engagement and outreach materials and organization of educational offerings, bicycle repair clinics, bike rides, and community events. The project area is the District of Columbia east of the Anacostia River, with specific emphasis on the Congress Heights, Anacostia, and St. Elizabeths areas.

The East of the River Program Associate will have primary day-to-day responsibility for delivery of bicycling outreach through one-on-one, grassroots community engagement, and will be responsible for coordinating logistics of numerous outreach events to communicate to community members the value of bicycling as a viable form of affordable, healthy, sustainable transportation.

This position is grant-funded and is anticipated to run through mid-August 2013. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, committed to getting more people on bikes, a strong communicator, knowledgeable about the community to be served, and organized. Hours are flexible, but weekend work will be required. The majority of work will be outdoors likely involving bicycling, interacting with the public, or at outdoor community events, but the associate will also be responsible for planning and preparing reports for supervisors and funders.

The associate will report directly to the WABA outreach coordinator and will be directed by WABA program staff. This will afford the associate the opportunity to learn from professionals in the fields of event planning, community planning, grassroots organizing, online activism, and outreach.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong commitment to WABA’s mission, growing bicycling as transportation
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and public-speaking skills
  • A flexible schedule and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • The ability to organize time wisely and multi-task in a relaxed and fun, but demanding, environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Benefits include a flexible schedule, vacation, and sick and personal leave. Compensation is $15 an hour. This position is part-time, about 20 to 25 hours per week.
