Smart Growth America seeks a Communications and Policy Fellow to support LOCUS, a national network of smart growth real estate developers and investors. The Fellow will be a core member of the LOCUS team and provide direct support to the LOCUS network of real estate developers and investors advocating for smart growth policies at the federal and regional levels.

Responsibilities
The Communications and Policy Fellow’s primary responsibilities include:

 

  • Aggregating news about smart growth and real estate issues;
  • Assist in planning, writing and managing monthly Newsletter;
  • Update the LOCUS website, as needed;
  • Contributing to LOCUS’ social media presence;
  • Tracking social media and web analytics;
  • Writing original content for our blog;
  • Drafting legislative summaries for network members, drafting advocacy materials on core network issues;
  • Design flyers, graphics, e-vites and other marketing material for major events hosted by LOCUS;
  • Assisting with outreach to reporters and bloggers; and
  • Providing communications support for our LOCUS members

 

The LOCUS Fellowship requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with exceptional writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Candidates should have a strong interest in real estate, smart growth, economic development, transportation, community growth or related areas. Candidates should have at least a bachelor’s degree and either educational background or work experience in real estate, housing policy, transportation policy, urban planning, finance, public policy, business, or a related field.

In addition, the Communications Fellow should have a basic understanding of HTML; proficiency using content management systems; solid understanding of social media for organizations; and interest in contributing to communications strategy. Knowledge of Photoshop and leading new media strategies are a definite plus.

Candidates should be highly computer literate with experience in web content, and the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

This is a paid position.

Timeframe:

Fellowship is full-time, 40 hours a week. Minimum commitment of six months required. Potential to extend fellowship to 12 months is possible pending performance. Applications will be accepted immediately on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

The ideal candidate for this position is a mid-career or senior level professional with experience in identifying, planning, and implementing new national program initiatives and leading the development and implementation of programs for outreach and public information to improve the proficiency of highway safety professionals.  He/she has a high degree of independence in planning, prioritizing, scheduling, and carrying out assignments and maintaining effective working relationships as a leader or member of teams or working groups.  In addition, the ideal candidate has excellent person-to-person and written communication skills.

Duties:

  • Provide leadership in technical, programmatic engineering and policy assistance to FHWA field offices, State and local agencies, and other internal and external customers to implement safety programs for all levels of government.
  • Provide resources to help safety experts and specialists develop critical knowledge and skills within the roadway safety workforce.
  • Lead the development and implementation of programs for outreach and public information to improve the proficiency of highway safety professionals.
  • Coordinate with other Federal, State, and local agencies and professional organizations and serve on intra-agency task forces with partners to improve the safety workforces’ knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Plan and conduct briefings and regional and national meetings for FHWA, State, and local safety professionals and other highway safety-related organizations.
  • Identify customer’s needs and provide resources to facilitate the deployment of roadway safety tools.

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (National Partnership) is seeking a professional and detail-oriented candidate with experience in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy to join the National Partnership as the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Fellow. This is a temporary, contract position.

The Active Transportation Fellow will work with the Regional Network Manager and Greater Washington DC Regional Policy Manager to advocate for improved transportation funding allocations and policies for Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets and walking and bicycling. Please review the scope of work for the position for detailed information and application instructions.

Required qualifications for the Greater Washington DC Active Transportation Policy Fellow include: demonstrated experience in social media; student work or personal work in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy or policy; knowledge of Safe Routes to School and/or Complete Streets; ability to write case studies, participate in work groups and present to a variety of audiences; self-starter; detail-oriented; proficient with social media such as Twitter, Facebook and WordPress, PCs and with MS Office software. We are specifically looking for a go- getter; someone who is enthusiastic about WABA’s mission and comfortable making “the ask,” i.e. selling memberships by engaging existing and potential individual and business members with WABA.

Responsibilities

The membership coordinator will:

  • Manage WABA’s membership program in order to gain, retain, and engage our current membership and to further grow our member base.
  • Improve upon existing membership growth and retention strategies and develop new strategies as needed in order to meet (or exceed) annual membership revenue goals.
  • Process and fulfill membership and renewal contributions and store item purchases through our CRM database.
  • Update and de-duplicate database with member and supporters information.
  • Assist with a variety of tasks related to the administration of the program, including data entry, organization/inventory, clerical work, etc.
  • Regularly represent WABA at our events, other community events, and through pop-up, on-street outreach, engaging area bicyclists about bicycling and WABA and actively selling memberships.
  • Handle all facets of membership-related communications and messaging including email communication, blog posts, web content, social media communication (in collaboration with the Communications Coordinator), direct mail, print materials, and merchandise.
  • Respond to membership concerns via email, phone, or in-person.
  • Manage the Business Membership Program, researching, pursuing, and securing annual business membership targets and revenue goals.
  • Oversee and market member benefits/discount partnership program including securing new member benefit partners and promoting existing partners through blog, social media, and membership materials.
  • Collaborate with WABA staff to effectively grow and promote membership through our outreach, events, education, and communications.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong commitment to WABA’s mission.
  • Capacity for development and fundraising.
  • A comfort with “making the ask” i.e. actively selling memberships and fundraising. This is not a position for someone who is not willing or comfortable engaging individuals or asking for financial support.
  • Previous CRM database management or maintenance experience.
  • Experience with direct mail and email communication campaigns a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer literacy skills with specific experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • A high attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy.
  • A self-motivated approach, able to manage programs and campaigns with little
    oversight.
  • Excellent time management skills, able to balance multiple tasks and priorities
    simultaneously.

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is looking for a dedicated, self-motivated lover of bicycling to assist in planning and executing major components of our East of the River 2013 Bicycle Outreach Initiative. This is an expansion of our successful 2012 program and includes distribution of community engagement and outreach materials and organization of educational offerings, bicycle repair clinics, bike rides, and community events. The project area is the District of Columbia east of the Anacostia River, with specific emphasis on the Congress Heights, Anacostia, and St. Elizabeths areas.

The East of the River Program Associate will have primary day-to-day responsibility for delivery of bicycling outreach through one-on-one, grassroots community engagement, and will be responsible for coordinating logistics of numerous outreach events to communicate to community members the value of bicycling as a viable form of affordable, healthy, sustainable transportation.

This position is grant-funded and is anticipated to run through mid-August 2013. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, committed to getting more people on bikes, a strong communicator, knowledgeable about the community to be served, and organized. Hours are flexible, but weekend work will be required. The majority of work will be outdoors likely involving bicycling, interacting with the public, or at outdoor community events, but the associate will also be responsible for planning and preparing reports for supervisors and funders.

The associate will report directly to the WABA outreach coordinator and will be directed by WABA program staff. This will afford the associate the opportunity to learn from professionals in the fields of event planning, community planning, grassroots organizing, online activism, and outreach.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong commitment to WABA’s mission, growing bicycling as transportation
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and public-speaking skills
  • A flexible schedule and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • The ability to organize time wisely and multi-task in a relaxed and fun, but demanding, environment

Why I love @DDOTDC… and what other transportation agencies/organizations can learn from them

I’m a big fan of transportation agencies using social media to reach their customers & stakeholders.  But often you will find many of these agencies send out tweets and Facebook posts that are plain boring and borderline irritating.  Fortunately, some agencies do understand the importance of adding humor and fun to keep their messages appealing yet entertaining without looking too mundane.  Among a handful of agencies that do this so well is @DDOTDC (aka DC Department of Transportation). They always know how to mix up the seriousness of a bland transportation message with a little bit of humor to make it easy for the end-user to consume, esp. at the end of a long day.  The communications team at @DDOTDC has done a commendable job on many occasions and today is not an exception.

Like every time it happens, today DC metropolitan area got into panic-mode when snow flurries started hitting the ground. As folks left offices/workplaces early, the vehicle traffic started building up on the streets. So, to lighten up the mood and poke a bit of fun of the traditional behavior of DC metro residents, the @DDOTDC team pushed out a series of fun tweets titled Top 5 signs it’s snowing in DC”:

And you see my point? How refreshing is it to see a public agency do something like this instead of just sending out plain boring traffic congestion updates during an already crazy time on the streets?  If you happen to serve as a communications in-charge at any transportation agency, you will be thrilled to see such great levels of audience engagement from the community for each one of these messages (i.e., retweets, Favs, etc). So, if you get a chance, say “Thank You” to the @DDOTDC team for their fun yet sincere community service and all the hard work they put in to keeps us safe on the roads.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to help develop, coordinate, implement, and communicate all of the Georgetown BID’s transportation initiatives to make Georgetown more accessible, improve pedestrian, bike, transit, and auto mobility, and improve the perception that Georgetown is easy to get to, around, and from.

RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Works with CEO, Marketing Director, Deputy Director for Operations, and other Staff, Board, and community, stakeholders to develop Georgetown transportation initiatives and participates in all city efforts that contribute to, or impact, Georgetown transportation including: public and private parking, street configuration, signage,
street cars and bus transit, taxi, para-transit, bike, bike sharing, car sharing, curb management, pedestrian experience, transportation marketing, organizing, and
advocacy programs.

B. Specifically:

  1. Coordinates the BID’s participation in citywide streetcar program and organizes the BID stakeholder coalition working to bring the streetcar to Georgetown.
  2. Coordinates the BID’s participation with the DC Circulator (DC Surface Transit Inc.)
  3. Works with research coordinator to collect, update and report Georgetown transportation data including pedestrian counts, vehicle counts, parking statistics, and other relevant information.
  4. Coordinates the BID’s activities to improve signage and wayfinding in Georgetown.
  5. Oversees the BIDs efforts to develop a retail parking program (both on and off street).
  6. Participates in an implementation program to improve Georgetown’s street furniture system. This should be integrated with other programs such as the Circulator and CaBi.
  7. Works with city agencies and neighborhood stakeholders to plan and implement performance parking and other transportation programs that improve the experience of coming to Georgetown whether by car, bike, bus, or foot.
  8. Works with marketing department to develop and communicate all materials necessary to support this program.

C. In general develops project plans, budgets, and implementation schedules, prepares RFPs for appropriate phases of projects, administers contracts and manages projects to timely completion.
D. Helps identify and secure outside resources to fund both planning and implementation from private, partnership, city and federal sources.
E. Integrates the BIDs transportation agenda into other relevant parts of the BID program.
F. Provides support for other Georgetown projects upon request of the CEO.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Transportation Director reports to the CEO and works closely with all other staff members.

SCOPE

  • Manages interns and consultants only.
  • May represent the Georgetown BID to the city and Georgetown stakeholders on transportation issues.
  • Exercises high level of initiative, independence, non-policy decision making and negotiation and implementation of projects.
  • Develops budgets, and expends funds as approved for specific line items.
  • Makes recommendations on major expenditures.
  • Integrates transportation with other departments and organizations of the BID.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 4-years of experience in the field of transportation, urban planning or related field.
  • Strong written communication skills, including preparation of RFPs, and/or detailed reports.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including public speaking, facilitating and negotiating skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in strategic planning.
  • Experience managing multiple tasks to bring projects to timely completion.
  • Basic analytical skills
  • Bachelors degree required (preferably in related field of transportation, urban planning, public administration, public policy or related field). Masters degree preferred but not required.

Heading to Washington, DC for the 2013 TRB Annual Meeting? Read this ASAP.

The Cities and Transportation program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in partnership with CIVITAS, a program of the European Union on sustainable urban mobility, solicits proposals for short form presentations on innovations in sustainable urban mobility. Innovations can span topics as broad as, “how I stimulated innovation in city government” to something more specific such as “how I integrated payment systems when there are multiple transit operators.”

 

Presentations will follow the Ignite or pecha kucha format of 20 slides of 20 seconds each. Presentations are timed so there is no wriggle room. The purpose of the format is to challenge speakers to distill their ideas to the most salient points and to tell a good story.
