Adding Ammo To The Argument: Why Riding A Motorcycle Is Good (& Encouraged) In Britain

June 6, 2012 at 4:56 pm

A few days back we saw a nice video from RidetoWorkUK , promoting motorcycles as a commuting option.  And today I saw this new video posted by a British biker showing how wonderfully he bypassed a longggg traffic queue by hopping on the dedicated bus lane.  And with that today I learned, motorcycles are allowed to use bus lanes in some parts of UK..

Why are we not doing that in this part of the world (i.e., US)? Or do you know of any cities where such a practice is in place?

Mountain of Stupid: Why are these stupid bikers not in jail for endangering the lives of everyone on the road…

Seriously, this video tells you how far America has deteriorated into the abuse of law. The attorney clearly knows what is wrong here (over speeding: speed at impact ~110mph; at times nearing 140mph-160mph as shown in the helmet cam recording) but he still presents the case without any qualms and goes  on to showcase this as a milestone achievement for his firm.  It is clearly the motorcyclists fault and I’m curious to know how this attorney claims to have gotten compensation from multiple insurance companies! (Either he is lying through his teeth or have some stupid layers representing the insurance companies?). As the Redditor pointed out this is a mountain of stupid.   Of course, the operator of the motorcycle is dead, which leaves me wondering if the police have pressed charges against the rest of this reckless crew of bandits who put everyone else (and their own lives) at risk in this high-speed thrill ride. Stupid. A Mountain of Stupid!

Apart from the fun element, I learned from this video that bike riders (in UK??) save an average of 306 hours annually off their commutes.. So, what will you do with so much free time?  Oh, and the Ride To Work Day in UK is June 18th.. Are you ready to don the leather & latex?

You Decide On Your Speed. Physics Decides Whether You Live Or Die! – Striking Australian road safety campaign targets motorcycle safety and speed

This stunning video from Victoria, Australia  arrives just in time as the weather around the US starts to warm up and the motorcyclists are polishing up the iron ponies for some good times on the road. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC)’s public education campaign targets two of Victoria’s biggest issues in road safety — motorcycle safety and speed.  The description of the video as shown on YouTube: The campaign, titled “Reconstruction”, features a slow motion replay of a crash involving a motorcyclist and a car. The ad graphically depicts the rider suffering a broken neck as a result of his speeding prior to the collision.

The video get’s the message across in an very effective way.  If you haven’t yet, you may want to check out the other campaign videos made by the TAC on their awesome YouTube Channel (~19 million views and 4600 subscribers. Whew!!!).  Brilliant use of public $$ to educate the public! Hope the US Department of Transportation puts out a similar campaign to educate the American motorcyclists. and prevent thousands of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists (statistics: 3615 people died in 2010 from motorcycle accidents on U.S. roads) .

Mother of All Road Rage Incidents Comes from Brazil and it involves a motorcycle

Moral of the story is clear as a crystal: Never mess with folks on Brazilian roads. These are some crazy drivers who will go to any extent to prove a point..Scary stuff! Glad neither party did not have a lorry or a freight truck (for that matter a gun) else this could have turned into a nightmare for many involved. Interestingly, the driver of the car is a woman, a fact that I did not even realize until I started reading the comments below the video. Drivers of Brazil, spare the poor motorcyclists.

Poetry at Bullet Speed – MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner Breaks Down Technique For Cornering At High Speeds

March 12, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Earlier today, a Redditor (iamstandingbehindyou) first posted this picture shown below of MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner. The way this rider was captured made a lot of folks wonder if it is photoshopped or a real one.  Looking at the banking angle, one would assume that either the rider & the bike are already in the process of biting the dust or have to conclude that it is no way a real one.

Later in the day, another Redditor (unfknreal) posted the Red Bull Moments video below which confirmed that it is NOT a silly photoshop but a very real and  legendary live performance caught on camera. Sheer poetry in  motion caught on camera and the 1000fps slow motion reveals the beuaty of that split second action in all its glory! Just look at that sheer talent! I had goose bumps just watching it on video.  I think this is what legends are made of – delivering such virtuoso performance as part of their everyday business.   For a guy who has been riding bikes since he was 4 years old, it shows how much talent he has handling a screaming monster on the race track. Casey Stoner = LEGEND.  Respect!

Racing Masterclass – This is what gliding on ice at 258 kmph at looks like (with -4F temperature)

March 9, 2012 at 8:12 pm

My heart skipped a beat watching this video. Let’s leave it at that.  The details from MotoJournal about this video:  EXTREME, 258 KM/H ON ICE: Porsche GT3RS, Mitsubishi Evo 9 face to Yamaha R1 and WRF 450 in Lapland by minus 20 degrees on the replica (scale one) of the legendary track of Le Castellet. Who will win? Don’t miss “Ice Age 5” on the 27th of March! Now, I can’t wait till March 27 to catch the whole craziness.

Distracted Driving? Nah. Just A London Cabbie-in-Training Prepping To Master “All-London Knowledge”

A fellow Redditor spotted this cabbie-in-training somewhere near Piccadilly,  London.  And the hive minds offered more details on what’s this is all about:  a prospective London Taxi-Driver learning “the Knowledge” which involves memorizing the street names. So, today I learned that London cab drivers’ Knowledge is based on learning 320 routes (or runs). This will help them learn the 25,000 streets and 20,000 landmarks and places of interest in the six mile radius of Charing Cross. Amazing that it takes between two and four years to pass the All-London Knowledge and once you are licensed you can work anywhere in the Greater London area.

Caution: Remember to Breathe! Drifting Like a Devil – Awesome Biker Stunt!

As a former devil who rode on two wheels, this video makes me gasp for air. The balance and control required to pull off the moves with this degree of difficulty by French stunt ace Jorian Ponomareff is simply breathtaking.  This video has all the ingredients to make it go viral (it has already registered a 445K hits on YouTube –  incredibly beautiful slow motion camera work, nice music and a lot of extreme motoring talent.  Add to the mix a smattering of French (heard in the making of the stunt) and a beautiful blonde girl strutting her style with a pair of jean shorts – now you have everything to make this a compelling video! If you still find a few minutes, check out other stunt videos on Jorian’s Facebook page.
