Gulping Gallons? Fuel Efficiency in the United States – An Infographic Overview

November 2, 2011 at 6:26 pm

(Source:  Moving Solutions, Inc. via Autobloggreen)

MoveBuilder has put together an excellent infographic that has all these values, along with such esoteric numbers as the fuel consumption of NASA’s Crawler-transporter and how fast a person could pedal a bike if he or she could metabolize gasoline as efficiently as food (912mph, which would be a really good reason to stay clear of the bike lane).

Transportation Voice Recordings

If you’re a reader of the TCN you’re probably interested in good communications. Part of that is making sure your message is clear and persuasive. I can help you with that. I’m one of the few people who specialize in transportation voice recordings. There are unique challenges in communicating in transportation environments such as acoustics and background noise, and I can help you deal with those challenges. My voice is heard by thousands daily in one of the toughest locations in the world, the New York City subway. I’m also the voice who welcomes travelers to Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports onboard the AirTrain.

Transit isn’t the only place my work can be heard. For example, I’ve narrated videos for Econolite, and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority; TV and radio commercials for NJ Transit; phone recordings for TransCore and PATH; and a PowerPoint presentation for the I-95 Corridor Coalition. I’ve even done line announcing, such as for the cornerstone laying ceremony for the new 1 World Trade Center tower.

Click here to read what some of my clients have said. I’d be honored to be considered for your project. Please contact me atbernie@bwcommunications.net for more information.

U.S. Surface Transportation Re-authorization Bill – Update as of July 6, 2011

July 6, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Update via ITS America

House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla., will introduce the committee’s multi-year surface transportation reauthorization proposal tomorrow — Thursday, July 7, at 11 a.m. Eastern time. According to Chairman Mica, the bill will not only reauthorize and reform the nation’s federal highway, transit and highway safety programs, but will also make significant improvements to passenger and freight rail programs and maritime transportation policy. “This fiscally responsible, multi-modal initiative would streamline federal programs, cut red tape, better leverage our federal resources, make wise investments in our infrastructure and create needed jobs for Americans,” according to the Chairman. The rollout event is scheduled to last approximately 90 minutes.  Live video of the event will also be available at www.transportation.house.gov by clicking the “Live Webcasts” link.

Streetsblog Capitol Hill reports that Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, wants transportation reauthorization bill passed soon in order to avoid the loss of 600,000 jobs in the construction and transit industries. She issued a call to action this morning, pushing for a new bill before the current extension of SAFETEA-LU expires on September 30.   Though she had initially pushed for a six-year bill, Boxer made it official that the EPW proposal is for a two-year bill that will only cover current funding levels plus inflation—about $109 billion over the two years.

At today’s press conference, Boxer focused mostly on the urgency of saving 500,000 construction sector jobs and 100,000 transit jobs, citing new Federal Highway Administration stats about the ramifications if Congress passes Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget, with its 30 percent cuts to transportation. Boxer’s aides pulled out charts detailing just how many jobs would be lost in each state (See Chart here), and Boxer pointed to the over 43,000 that her home state of California would shed. Click here to read the rest on Streetsblog Capitol Hill

Note: And I found this interesting nugget on infrastructure spending on the EPW Press Release. It shows we have a long way to go to match the Chinese: According to a report by the Department of the Treasury and the Council of Economic Advisors, the United States currently spends 2 percent of GDP on infrastructure, a 50 percent decline from 1960. Meanwhile, China is spending close to 9 percent of their GDP on infrastructure.

Fighting Lawlessness, the Lawless Way – Walmart Shopper Chases After Thieves, Jumps On Their Car

June 22, 2011 at 10:20 pm

(Source: Good Morning America via Huffington Post)

As crazy as this looks, it also makes you think how fed-up this Walmart customer should have been to take a drastic action like this?  Meet Ms. Monique Lawless, a single mom from Alvin, Texas, who bolted out a Walmart store to stop a bunch of teeny thieves and jumped on top of the feeling criminals’ Camaro, according to ABC. As they began to drive away, she desperately tried to hold onto the car before losing her grip.  Though she was not hurt, this spurt of bravery apparently slowed down the escapees, enough to help the cops to catch up with the thieves.

Note: Next time when something like this happens, let’s hope Ms. Lawless does not risk her precious life to stop a bunch of cowardly thugs. Save it for something more precious, madam.   Let the long arm of law and the police, who are equipped with every weapon in the arsenal, handle such things. In any case, a tip of the hat for her selflessness and valor that is quite inspiring for many ordinary citizens like myself.

Coco Cola’s New Campaign Transforms Crowded Highway Into An Outdoor Theater – Clever Marketing or Driver Distraction?

May 11, 2011 at 4:58 pm

(Source:  Mashable.com)

Coco- Cola’s new product campaign in Bogota, Colombia uses the street-side environment decked with a large movie screen display and models handing out the coke mini to the drivers caught in congestion.  The neat trick I found so fascinating is how they made this an interactive experience – asking the drivers to tune into a radio station to hear the accompanying sound track while watching the visuals on the screen (infrastructure required to do this is not too complicated.  You may have seen a similar set-up near Work Zones, with Highway Advisory Radios offering traffic congestion information).  The whole experience is capped by the colorfully dressed models handing out the products to drivers.

On one hand it looks like a clever way to market the product while entertaining the drivers who got no place to go expect to wait for the traffic to clear up and on the other hand it looks like a terrific way to get a fender bender with all the audio-visual distractions.  It will be nice to know if someone is collecting traffic incident data on this particular stretch of highway during this campaign.  It will shed some light on the effects of such campaigns on the road users.

Connection between Diapers & Politicians

April 20, 2011 at 10:51 am

This one made me chuckle.. Someone should have shared this with the populations of Mid-East, which probably explains why we saw a wave of regime changes across Tunisia, Egypt, etc.
