Stupid Kids Earn the Wrath of Internet Activism – How A School Bus Harassment Incident Got The Internet Abuzz

June 20, 2012 at 4:51 pm

via Mashable.com

Who knew middle schoolers are this bad.. A bunch of 12-15yr old kids harassed a 69-yr old bus monitor in Greece, NY and somehow the video tape made its way to the interwebs.. Like in many cases, the activist hive minds on the web have kicked off a campaign to raise funds to send this poor old lady on a vacation and also start planning actively on how to get the kids repent their action.. The following Story, curated by Ben Doernberg documents the incident and the outpouring of support from the internet and the media. It will be interesting to see how this story ends – I somehow think it will be safe to assume there will be some suspensions involved when it is all said and done.

The world’s first international airline service was launched. The service, which was run by Lignes Aeriennes Farman (which later transformed into what is today’s Air France), flew on a weekly basis between Brussels, Belgium, and Paris, France. Farman F60 Goliath biplanes were used to transport passengers, and the total flying time one way was two hours and 50 minutes. (Hat tip: AASHTO)

A Tunnel Divides Them: Germans and Danes Split over Undersea Link – SPIEGEL ONLINE – News – International

December 30, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Via Scoop.itTransportation Today

Denmark plans to build a 20-kilometer tunnel under the Baltic Sea to Germany in what would be the largest infrastructure project in Europe and one of the world’s longest undersea tunnels.   “It’s an enormous, groundbreaking project: nearly 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) long, 40 meters (130 feet) wide, nearly 10 meters high — and expected to cost at least €5.5 billion ($7.2 billion). Four tubes are planned: two for the highway, each with two lanes, and two for the railway, each with one track. The tunnel would consist of huge concrete elements assembled on land and lowered by boats into a colossal trench on the Baltic seafloor. It would be one of the longest immersed tunnels ever built.”

Job Alert: Internship assignment – Intelligent Transport Systems — International Road Federation (IRF)

February 11, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Terms of Reference

Internship assignment – Intelligent Transport Systems
February 2011
The International Road Federation
Founded in 1948, the International Road Federation (IRF) is the only world forum advocating better and safer roads through optimum road design and construction. IRF  is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit organisation with the mission to promote roads that are safe, economically viable and ecologically friendly.   As a unique global platform bringing together public and private entities, IRF is committed to sound road infrastructure that brings prosperity, fights poverty, furthers education and gives better access to health services.  www.irfnet.org
Context
Clients are increasingly demanding members of the International Road Federation (IRF) for integral solutions to their mobility problems, rather than just a stretch of tarmac. IRF wants to be at the forefront of future developments and strongly believes Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have a considerable role to play. Despite a growing body of evidence that ITS deployment contributes to  important transport policy objectives such as improving road safety, reducing negative environmental impacts of transport and increasing network efficiency, ITS still suffers from a lack of support from politicians, high level policy makers and the general public. IRF has taken up  this awareness challenge by creating a Policy Committee on ITS, which saw its kick off during the ITS World Congress in New York in 2008.
The mission of the IRF Policy Committee on ITS is to foster the deployment of ITS by supporting the development of national and regional ITS strategies and by encouraging governments to integrate ITS as a major tool to achieve their transport policy objectives.  The Policy Committee  is open to IRF members, national and supranational governments, national and regional authorities, ITS Associations, intergovernmental institutions and other organisations upon invitation by the IRF.
The Policy Committee meets twice a year during working meetings and holds information meetings during the annual ITS World Congress. This year’s world congress will take place in Orlando, Florida in October 2011. By then the Committee is aiming to have produced two deliverables:
  • A lobby document containing political arguments to invest in ITS
  • An ITS Strategy Toolkit: an online kit containing tools and information to set up an effective ITS strategy
A provisional outline of the deliverable can be found in the Annex.  An editorial team consisting of Committee members is being established for the supervision of the production.
Assignment
The intern will be asked to:
  • Elaborate a structure/outline for the Lobby document;
  • Perform background research and establish contacts with  relevant partner organisations to obtain useful inputs, references, case studies, etc.;
  • Draft sections of the Lobby document and support the editorial team in delivering and reviewing sections of the Lobby document;
  • Support and coordinate with the review team for validation purposes;
  • Otherwise assist the ITS Programme Manager in the coordination of the production.

Job Alert: Internal Tolling Auditor – Washington State Department of Transportation @ Thurston County – Lacey, WA

October 22, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Job Title: Internal Tolling Auditor

Opening Date/Time: Thu. 10/14/10 12:00 AM Pacific Time

Closing Date/Time: Fri. 11/19/10 11:59 PM Pacific Time

Salary: $57,384.00 – $73,596.00 Annually

Job Type: Full Time – Permanent

Location: Thurston County – Lacey, Washington

Department: Washington State Dept. of Transportation

In many jobs to be successful means following an already existing system. To be successful in this job, you will have to innovate and lead. Within the Agency, the Internal Audit Office works to help management evaluate and improve internal controls, risk management, and the internal governance processes. While tolling is a prominent part of transportation funding on the East Coast and in Europe, it is relatively new on the West Coast, especially in Washington State. WSDOT currently tolls the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the SR 167 HOT lanes. However, as the demand for increased traffic efficiency grows, WSDOT is significantly expanding its Tolling Program with preparations underway to toll SR 520, and develop a statewide Customer Service Center for all toll facilities. As tolling expands in Washington State, so too will the need for experienced audit professionals to advise management by independently planning, conducting, and managing accountability , financial and compliance audit engagements.

This position plays an important role in conducting or overseeing the risk-based internal audits of the Tolling Program and advises management of the impacts of internal control weaknesses and noncompliance and recommends alternative actions. Not just anyone can do this job. In the spirit of full disclosure, WSDOT auditors are tasked with helping to build and maintain an internal control system that demonstrates accountability to a somewhat skeptical public. This requires hard work, travel, acute attention to detail, innovation, and tenacity. However, the rewards of knowing that your work is helping to build successful and accountable tolling in Washington State and furthering the mission of WSDOT, is priceless. So ask yourself, are you ready to take on this role?

The successful candidate will perform the following tasks:

  • Manage the Internal Audit Office’s Tolling Audit Program and serve as the primary auditor. This position works independently, reporting to the Assistant Director of Internal Audit.
  • Plan and conduct individual audit and consulting engagements and prepare reports.
  • Participate in preparing the annual work plan for the Internal Audit Office.
  • Provide recommendations that will improve accountability or which will bring an organization into legal compliance.
  • Evaluate actions determined by management to correct deficiencies identified in prior audit reports and management reviews.
  • May direct the audit work of external audit firms. May act as the liaison from the Department to external audit groups.
  • May oversee the work of subordinate audit specialists.
  • Advise on Business Rules and Standard Operating Procedures, as necessary, for the Statewide Customer Service Center and Tolling Facilities.

At WSDOT, our top-performing employees come in many different forms; however an ideal candidate will look something like this:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Audit, Business Administration or a closely related field.
  • Information technology (IT) audit experience to include reviewing controls of IT processes, applications, networks, or platforms.
  • Experience evaluating and communicating best practices in IT controls in environments similar to tolling.
  • Certification in one or more of the following: Certified Public Accountant (CPA); Certified Internal Auditor (CIA); Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA); and by having a minimum of four years professional auditing experience demonstrating progressive development of skills and responsibilities.
  • A master’s degree in a related field will also be given consideration.
  • Experience with auditing practices and procedures, including principles and methods of effective internal controls .
  • Knowledge of accounting theory and practice for governments and commercial enterprises.
  • Fully understand the Institute of Internal Auditor Standards and Government Auditing Standards.
  • Knowledge of techniques in management and supervision.
  • Effective communication both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lead discussions and support audit staff presenting results of internal audit engagements to agency management or private firms.
  • Acute attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel to all areas in Washington State, and at times, outside of the state, remaining overnight for up to five consecutive days or longer. Arrange for transporting equipment and other items for work.
  • A valid Washington State Driver’s License (or the ability to get one) and the ability to drive a state vehicle to meetings and events.
  • Ability to work varied schedules.

Application assessment will be ongoing and the hiring authority reserves the right to offer the position at any time during the recruitment process. It is to the applicant’s advantage to apply as early as possible.

Be prepared to provide references at the time of interview.
