Job Description

Next City seeks an Executive Director & Editor in Chief at an exciting time: the organization has a rapidly growing online presence and audience, as well as strong philanthropic support. At this juncture, Next City seeks a hands-on executive who will lead its next phase of growth by overseeing the organization’s editorial strategy and programs, developing the organization’s business plan and providing thought-leadership. The right candidate will be comfortable talking about urban policy trends at public events and on television, expressing Next City’s vision to funders and readers, and leading staff to achieve their best.

The Executive Director & Editor in Chief will accomplish the following:

Editorial Leadership & Programming

–       Set editorial strategy and ensure high standards of editorial content

–       Develop ideas for innovative programming for high-impact events

–       Serve as the face of the organization in media, at events and with donors

–       Leverage and build upon the success of the Vanguard Conference, an annual 40 under 40 urban leadership conference

Fundraising / Business Development

–       Develop an overall strategy to build sustainable revenue opportunities

–       Maintain and grow Next City’s foundation and corporate support

–       Build relationships to develop major corporate sponsorships for events and sponsored content

–       Develop an individual donor base for Next City, from subscribers to major donors

–       Plan and execute an annual fundraiser

Budget / Administration

–       Develop annual budget for board approval and submit quarterly financial reports

–       Hire, lead and manage all editorial and administrative staff

–       Work with COO and bookkeeper to oversee accounts receivable and payable and the annual audit process

Board

–       Serve as primary organizational liaison to board of directors

–       Increase the size, diversity, engagement and impact of Next City’s board

–       Meet with board quarterly and report Next City business

–       Establish board committees

Qualifications

–       At least 5 years of experience in senior management roles

–       Experience in and understanding of online media

–       Excellent public speaking and written communications skills

–       Passion for social, economic and environmental concerns

–       Demonstrated fundraising and/ or business development ability

–       Self-driven personality, start-up mentality, relationship-oriented work ethic

–       Experience in at least one of the following: media, urban policy, nonprofit development. (Those with experience in all three areas will be preferred.)

–       Ability to travel domestically and internationally 20% of time

–       Occasional nights and weekend work

Graduate Internship Opportunity

Northeast Corridor CommissionThe Northeast Corridor Commission seeks a graduate student to support all aspects of the Commission’s work. Working closely with a small team of highly motivated transportation professionals, the intern will have the opportunity to shape project work in coordination with Commission staff. The Commission is currently developing key reports on the current and future value of the NEC, while participating in the major short- and long-term planning efforts that will guide the development of the NEC. The intern will be responsible for policy research, transportation planning and analysis, report preparation, website content development, assistance with day-to-day office management and administration, and other tasks as assigned. Successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to undertake unfamiliar initiatives and strong enthusiasm for the Commission’s work.

The Commission maintains a full-time staff in Washington, DC. The Commission is accepting intern applications from current graduate students in the Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York metropolitan areas. This paid internship includes term-time work in spring 2013, with the possibility of extending into summer 2013.

Qualifications

Candidates should be pursuing a masters degree in public policy, urban and regional planning, transportation, business, or a related field. Candidates should have:

• Experience collecting, evaluating, and interpreting quantitative data;

• Excellent skills in written, verbal and graphic communication of quantitative and qualitative information, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts to wide audiences;

• Strong computer skills in data analysis, word processing, and graphic design – experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, data visualizations, and/or geographic information systems (GIS) is preferred; and

• An ability to build relationships with all levels of an organization, work in a fast-paced office environment with tight deadlines, and stay organized and detailed-oriented while working on a wide range of tasks.

PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Making bicycling better through advocacy and education, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (BCGP) promotes biking as a healthy, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly form of transportation and recreation in ten counties in Southeast Pennsylvania, South Jersey and Delaware.

The Development Director will lead a team fundraising effort of board members, volunteers, the Executive Director and seven other staff from across the organization. (The Development Director directly supervises two staff.) Our fundraising is composed of three teams (major gifts, membership and stewardship/database) to achieve the goals of significantly increasing major gifts and membership laid out in the 2011-2014 Strategic Plan (you can find the plan at bicyclecoalition.org/about).

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Development Director reports to the Executive Director. The Development Director will:

  • Work primarily out of the Bicycle Coalition office
  • Occasionally work outdoors
  • Travel to suburban evening meetings as well as several national events a year
  • Work some evenings and weekends

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development Director will:

  • Manage budgeting, planning and implementation for all fundraising, including major gifts, membership and stewardship
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Development Committee of the Board of Directors, implement a major donor campaign raising $250,000 from 400 identified donors
  • Develop and implement a membership campaign to double membership to 3600 households over two years
  • Manage the stewardship of all gifts, including managing donor data in Salesforce, workflows for acknowledgement, new members, recruiting volunteers and member communications
  • Supervise two fundraising staff and lead three staff-wide fundraising teams
  • Manage the Bicycle Coalition’s communications plan in coordination with the Policy Director and the Education & Safety Director
  • Support the Executive Director and Policy Directors’ work on grant applications and stewardship

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • A strong commitment to the Bicycle Coalition’s mission
  • Three or more years of a demonstrated working knowledge of the principles and practices of philanthropy, especially raising money from individuals through membership/annual giving and major gifts
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic status or sexual orientation
  • Ability to lead teams of volunteers and staff not under your direct supervision to achieve well-defined goals
  • Experience in managing donor data in an organization-wide database
  • Ability to complete work in an unstructured and informal environment with limited supervision
  • Problem solving skills, creativity, flexibility and self-motivation
  • A professional appearance and manner
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • A personal history of giving

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in making major gift solicitations and coordinating the efforts of volunteers in making solicitations of up to $50,000
  • Proven success in growing membership/annual fund giving, especially at an organization with a budget under $2 million
  • Supervisory experience, especially leading teams that cross program areas
  • Proven success in creating and managing direct mail campaigns
  • Experience with online giving and an understanding of how online content and communications drive fundraising results
  • Experience with Salesforce

This is an exempt position. Salary commensurate with experience.
