Racing Masterclass – This is what gliding on ice at 258 kmph at looks like (with -4F temperature)

March 9, 2012 at 8:12 pm

My heart skipped a beat watching this video. Let’s leave it at that.  The details from MotoJournal about this video:  EXTREME, 258 KM/H ON ICE: Porsche GT3RS, Mitsubishi Evo 9 face to Yamaha R1 and WRF 450 in Lapland by minus 20 degrees on the replica (scale one) of the legendary track of Le Castellet. Who will win? Don’t miss “Ice Age 5” on the 27th of March! Now, I can’t wait till March 27 to catch the whole craziness.

What 0->62 mph in 3.2 seconds and 78mpg looks like? Porsche debuts screaming hot “mother of all hybrids”

Hybrids and super fast were usually not spelled in the same sentence until Porsche opened a can (rather a car) of   surprise for the motoring world with its new hybrid 918 Spyder in Geneva earlier this year.

Now for the first time some of those potential customers got to see and hear Porsche’s latest creation in person. The 918 was flown over from Germany for the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Montery, California. The video above shows a covert shakedown drive before the car was shown to the public.

Happily Ever After? VW & Porsche near blissful “Auto Union”

August 12, 2009 at 6:41 pm

In late July Porsche announced Wendelin Wiedeking would be leaving his position as the company’s CEOto be replaced by Michael Macht, clearing the way for the supervisory board atVolkswagen to lay the foundation for an integrated company with underVolkswagen leadership. Today that merger has moved forward, and reports indicate the Auto Union name could be revived to brand it.

A Reuters report says that details of a deal between Volkswagen and Porsche have been broadly agreed, with VW set to buy a stake of up to 49 percent in the sportscar maker.  The supervisory boards of the German auto makers are expected to vote Thursday morning on a so-called memorandum of understanding, which would be a precursor to a more detailed and firm merger agreement, one of the people said.

The crucial point here is that the family-owned holding company Porsche Automobil Holding SE will get a much-needed cash injection from the sale – anywhere between 4 and 5.5 billion euros –  as well as an additional 5 billion euros from selling a package of options on VW shares to the Gulf state of Qatar.

The Porsche clan has already agreed to sell shares to raise at least 5 billion euros, so it should finally be in a position to pay off debts of more than 10 billion euros it stacked up building up a stake of just over 50 percent in VW.  Stuttgart-based Porsche ousted its chief executive, Wendelin Wiedeking, in July and is working to pay down a debt pile of more than 10 billion euros ($14.13 billion).

After the successful completion of the VW deal, the Porsche marque will then enter into a new “Auto Union” as the 10th brand, under the leadership of VW CEO Martin Winterkorn.

The Auto Union name was originally given to a merger of four German carmakers – Horch,  DKW and Wanderer – in 1932. The brand went on to fame in motorsports through the 1930s, but was disrupted by World War II, and subsequently went through a number of reformations, eventually ending in a renaming to  AG in 1985.

The integrated automotive group will be formed from the progressive participation of  in AG and the subsequent merger of Automobil Holding SE and  VolkswagenAG.  Porsche will remain an independent company headquartered in Stuttgart.” Today’s report re-affirms  independence, and the Auto Union name is apparently being considered to help preserve the idea that it’s not running the whole show.

Smart police have fast cars – May be in Europe but not in the USofA! European Police get highway patrol cars manufactured by Ferrari, Porsche & Lamborgini cars

From a Ferrari to a Smart Car, police forces around the world are spoiled for choice for fast cars when it comes to patrolling their patch.

There is fierce competition for the world’s fastest police car with the Italians and Germans vying for the title.

Up until now the police prix d’or has been held by a Lamborghini Gallardo which an Italian police patrol is using on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway.

But the Germans have their eye on a car which would leave the Lamborghini trailing in its wake.

It has placed an order for a Brabus CLS V12 S Rocket which has a top speed of 225mph. It will be used on the fastest stretches of the autobahn.

In San Diego officers are using a custom made police car with integrated shotgun mounts and a top speed of 155mph.

This article states that some of the British police officers drive the Greenest, if not the meanest, among all forces – the tiny  SmartforTwo cars.

TransportGooru wonders if this San Diego squad car is a silly Dodge Charger.  American police officers should think about doing some police work in Europe!  It will make a great cinema when California Highway Patrol chasing some Hollywood superstar’s Lamborghini Gallardo with his Dodge Charger with integrated shot gun mounts!
On a releated note, few days back a South Carolina Trooper, J.D. McGaha, was cited for speeding in his unmarked patrol car.  Guess what he got for mashing his Dodge Charger – 3 days suspension, possible fine worth $355 & 6 points on his license. Oh, his Dodge Charger was taken back by his Department. Trooper McGaha is definitely not driving a Charger like a Ferrari anymore. Read the TransportGooru article on this incident here.
